Lafayette – Ed Bowie, director of the Acadiana Open Channel, hosted members of the Lambda Kappa Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.

The Acadiana Open Channel (AOC) was created by Cox Communications and LUS Communications for the purpose of giving media access to nonprofit organizations to promote their information.

The AOC lends support, equipment and knowledge to the community.

A tour of the facility revealed a full-service recording studio designed with state-of-the-art multimedia equipment.

A new location is planned for the Rosa Parks Transportation Terminal.

Bowie invited the members to participate in a program, which hasn’t been offered to the public yet, of video scrapbooking, where individuals could narrate and script their family pictures.

In addition, Judy Herman presented a program on wood, as a good luck symbol, at TrYnd Restaurant in downtown Lafayette.

The phrase “knock on wood” is considered a superstition to prevent bad luck. The origin of the phrase could have come from rituals in early times where trees were considered sacred spirits.

In Ireland, people would “knock on wood” to alert leprechauns that they were thanking them for giving good luck.

Another popular belief is that by knocking on wood you prevent the devil from hearing what you have just said, which in turn prevents the action from occurring.

It is also possible that the origin of the phrase “knock on wood” is derived from Christianity, as a reference to the cross on which Jesus was crucified.

The earliest reference to the phrase was recorded in the early 1900’s.

The Louisiana Federation of Republican Women announced “A Day at the Legislature,” to be held in June.

The next meeting of the Lambda Kappa Chapter will be held in St. Martinville, where the group will tour Journey Stories - A Smithsonian Institute Exhibit sponsored by the Acadian Memorial.
