St. Martinville – James Akers, local historian, was the guest speaker at the first January Beta Rho meeting.

Members met at the St. Martin de Tours Church, where Akers gave an informative presentation and tour of the historical church.

He discussed every object, from the baptismal fount to the stained glass windows, in full detail.

He noted that all the beautiful statues in the church were symbols, and each statue told a story, which he related to the membership.

Akers shared the story of the famous Grotto, which adorns the church, and discussed how it was made and by whom.

Akers has a world of knowledge of this old church, and the city as well.

After the presentation, members learned much about the beloved church, and were thankful to Akers for sharing his knowledge with them.

After the tour, a brief meeting was conducted by president Arleen Oubre at the home of Louella Champagne, hostess.

The Hands and Hearts Social to honor this year’s Valentine Queen, Elaine Case, will be held at Little River Inn at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 6.

Yvette Greig won the courtesy gift, and Elaine Case received the floating gift basket.
