It took an extra game to do it, but Breaux Bridge’s Lady Tiger basketball team edged Northside to claim runner-up honor in District 5-4A last week.

The Lady Tigers fell to the Lady Vikings in the final game of the regular season on Feb. 14 by a lopsided 55-34 score to throw the race for second place into a tie between the two teams as both finished with 7-3 league records.

The two schools squared off again on Wednesday, Feb. 15, to break the tie and this time Breaux Bridge prevailed, holding off a spirited Northside fourth quarter rally to pull out an exciting 51-49 win.

But despite claiming the runner-up spot in 5-4A, the Lady Tigers (15-12) drew a lower seed than Northside (16-14). Breaux Bridge was assigned the No. 30 spot while the Lady Vikings were seeded No. 25. District champ St. Thomas More (29-2) was in the No. 1 spot while Teurlings Catholic (17-13) was seeded No. 28.

Breaux Bridge went up against No. 3 Salmen (24-3) on the road Monday night while St. Thomas More hosted No. 32 East Jefferson (11-16), Northside travelled to No 8 Warren Easton (21-10), and the Lady Rebels headed for No. 5 DeRidder (22-7).

If Breaux Bridge won Monday they will meet the winner of the No. 14 Alexandria-No. 19 Ursuline Academy matchup. The regional contest will be played Thursday night in Breaux Bridge if Alexandria wins, in New Orleans if Ursuline wins.
