Cole, who lives south of Erath, was in Abbeville to pick up groceries for a friend and traveling north on East Street (road along side of Food Etc.). As she approached the intersection of East Street and East Lafayette Street, she saw a tree had fallen during a thunder storm and was leaning against the wires, making the road not passable.
She stopped and turned around in the nearest driveway to avoid the tree and downed power lines. As she was backing out, she heard a loud noise behind her because her back glass shattered on her Saturn thanks to a tall tree laying on the back of her car.
“It took me about a second to realize what had happened,” said Cole. “I saw the branches on my car, and I knew.”
Cole escaped injuries and but that can not be said about her vehicle. The impact of the tree smashed the back roof and trunk. Minutes earlier she had just dropped off a child who would have been sitting in the back seat.
The two trees fell on electrical wires that supplied electricity to about 100 homes in Abbeville.
Cole’s vehicle had to moved by a tow-truck before the trees could be cleared by Abbeville workers.
City of Abbeville electrical workers had to trim the two trees with saws before they could begin to reconnect the wires.
