SWORDS – A tip that led authorities to a possible grave site here Thursday morning turned out to be a false lead in the search for Mickey Shunik.

Investigators and search dogs were sent to the scene after a tip was given to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Dept, Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said.

The site near St. Ann's Catholic Church turned out to have no connection to the case.

Brandon Scott Lavergne, who lives near here, is accused of killing Shunik who disappeared on the night of May 19 while riding her bicycle home in Lafayette.

Her bicycle was found at Whiskey Bay east of Lafayette a few days later.

Lavergne, a convicted sex offender, was arrested July 5.

Police have refrained from revealing much information regarding what led them to Lavergne.

They have said they can place him at Whiskey Bay and that they recovered his reportedly stolen pickup truck burned out near Houston, Texas.

A similar truck was established as a vehicle of interest by viewing surveillance tape of activity along Shunick's bicycle route.
