Master Gardener’s to meet May 7th

The May meeting of the Tangipahoa Master Gardener’s Association will be held on Thursday, May 7th at 10 a.m. at the Amite Extension Office. Refreshments provided by Janet Cieutat, Sara Taulli, and Carmen Robertson; door prizes by Ruth Dugas. Guest speaker is Brad Holder of Holder Orchids, and his topic is Orchids. Although the Master Gardener’s meetings are not open to the public, some gardening events in the area that are include the Baton Rouge Master Gardeners Plant Sale at Burden Research Center on Saturday, May 9th. Doors open at 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. For sale are plants that will perform well in south Louisiana’s warm season. Garden experts will be on hand to answer questions and there is a children’s tent, making this a real family event. For more information or directions, call 225-763-3990. Also on May 9th, is Longue Vue Garden’s annual open tour hosted by their head gardener, Ms Amy Graham. The gardens are location at #7 Bamboo Road in New Orleans. Tour guests will see all the new plantings and questions are encouraged. Cost for non-members is $8.00. The tour begins at 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. For more information call 504-488-5488. May 23 – 25, the Hattiesburg Daylily Society will host their annual open garden tour. Four private and one public garden in the area will be open to the public. And on May 30th, Dr Gary Ross, noted naturalist, will show visitors how to attract butterflies at the Red Stick Farmers Market in Baton Rouge, located at Fifth and Main Streets at 10 a.m. Local nurseries will have plants and herbs for purchase. There will also be face painting for children, music, produce from local farmers, as well as arts and crafts for sale. There is no cost for this event.
