Sugarcane field day to be held Aug. 24

St. Martinville – An LSU AgCenter field day for sugarcane producers in St. Martin, Lafayette and St. Landry parishes will be held Friday, July 24.

The event begins at the Levert-St. John Sugar Mill near St. Martinville at 1 p.m.

Dr. Jeff Hoy, professor from the LSU Department of Plant Pathology and Crop Pathology, will be a speaker on the field tour, which will start with registration beginning at 1 p.m. at the St. John Plantation Shed.

Mr. J. Roy will present a talk on the “X Tractor”, which is new technology that he has developed from removing the juice out of cane in the field.

Dr. Ken Gravois, Plant Breeder, Sugar Research Station and Dr. Michael Pontiff, Research Associate, Sugar Research Station will comment on sugar varieties at the Annual St. Martin/Lafayette/St. Landry Sugarcane Field Day.

The general assembly at the Woodmen of the World Building on Capritto Road, will be starting at 4 p.m. The guest speaker will be Dr. Mike Strain, Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry. An industry update will be given by Mr. Jim Simon, General Manager of the American Sugar Cane League.

Following Simon’s presentation, Windell Jackson with the American Sugar Cane League will discuss the Best Management Practices on Sugarcane Burning.

Alfred Guidry will recertify growers by showing a video on Smoke Management.
