BREAUX BRIDGE – An investigation is still under way for Mary Lucy Borel, 62, and her son Johnny Borel, 41, who died in a fire last Saturday morning.

“We are still waiting on the blood results of the two fatalities,” said Brian Castille, the St. Martin fire coordinator.

The fire took place at the Borels’ home at the 700 block of Cecile Boulevard, and investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire.

The fire broke out at 5 a.m. on Saturday morning. Several of the Borels’ neighbors attempted to enter the home in order to help the mother and son, but were not able to because of the massive smoke and flames.

The firefighters attempted to stop the fire from spreading, but by Saturday afternoon, most of the Borels’ home was completely gone.

The fire was so intense, in fact, that some of the firefighters were caught in a flashover, in which one firefighter’s protective gear caught on fire, State Fire Marshal Butch Browning said.

Browning explained that given the severity of the fire, firefighters did the best they could have done to stop it.
