Popular car show outgrows venue
So many entrants have already signed up for the Kiwanis Club’s planned August car show that it has to be moved to Magnolia Park. At the June 4 city council meeting, Kiwanis representative Michelle Broussard was given permission for the move. The council approved the use of the park and the closing of the boat ramp for several hours during the show, scheduled for August 25. The show was previously held on South Market Street in conjunction with the Pepper Festival. The decision was made to schedule it separately at the Festival Grounds, but the early response made it clear that more room would be needed. The 27th Pepper Festival will be held on September 13-15. Broussard was also given permission to sell alcohol at the Pepper Fest Extravaganza to be held at the Woodmen of the World building on Capritto-Forty Arpent Road. That event will be held on Saturday, July 28. In other business, Latanghue “Tangie” Narcisse, representing the group “Excellence,” received council approval to sell alcohol at the 7th annual Back2School Bash fund raiser on Friday, July 20. The “Karaoke Night” event will be held at the Magnolia Park recreation building to fund the purchase of school supplies for St. Martinville students. Attendees must be age 21 or older. On another matter, the council approved the hiring of an outside contractor to perform electric utility work at the Peppers Unlimited plant. The required changes to the service lines there are beyond the capability of city utility crews. Dist. 2 councilman Craig Prosper said the cost of the changes, needed to comply with OSHA specifications, will be worked out between the city and Peppers Unlimited. Police Chief Ricky Martin received council approval to hire a new full-time patrol officer. Officer David Vincent will join the force as soon as background checks and other Civil Service requirements are complete. Finally, two pay requests from Bulliard Construction for exterior renovations at the Maison Duchamp were approved. The invoices, totaling $50,150 are partial payment for window, wall and woodwork repairs and painting of the historic city-owned 1876 structure.
