Improvement noted on local LEAP scores

State Superintendent of Education John White last week announced the results of the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) testing for 2018 in Louisiana schools. The target is that students have to average mastery and meet other academic targets by 2025 for a school to be A-rated. The five scoring levels of the LEAP exams are advanced, mastery, basic, approaching basic and unsatisfactory. In the 2018 testing, 34 percent of Louisiana students in grades three to eight met the goal of mastery on the LEAP test. That was up slightly from the 2017 results of 33 percent. In St. Martin Parish, 31 percent of local students made or exceeded the mastery level. And while the growth of parish test results (three percent) was better than the state’s overall growth, St. Martin still lags behind six of the eight Acadiana parishes. Vermilion led the area with 43 percent of its students scoring mastery or above while St. Landry was at the bottom with only 27 percent scoring mastery or above. Neighboring Iberia was at 38 percent and Lafayette at 37 percent. However, parish Superintendent Dr. Lottie Beebe pointed out that the 3 percent growth of performance for parish students exceeded the state average and that local schools remain competitive. Stephensville Elementary ranked eighth in the state with the highest combined growth in ELA, math and social studies combined. St. Martinville Jr. High and Catahoula Elementary showed growths of eight and seven points, respectively, while Parks Middle students advancedfive points and Cecilia Jr. High 4 points. “I want to commend all stakeholders who played a role in the success we achieved,” Beebe said last week. “There was growth despite a number of challenges we confronted during the school year, including a shortage of 19 certified classroom teachers. We will continue our quest to increase student achievement in our school system.” District and school letter grades will not be released until October or early November.
