Carroll was a native and lifelong resident of Arnaudville. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served as a Staff Sergeant in both Korea and the war in Vietnam. He was a parishioner of St. Francis Regis Catholic Church in Arnaudville. Carroll had his right leg amputated at 22 years old due to an industrial accident. He worked for a local contractor prior to receiving his artificial limb and then went on to work for an oil related industry for 15 years. He then went on to own and operate his own oil related cement testing company for several years before his early retirement.

He went to work for the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office in 1999 as their Reserve Captain and was truly dedicated to the department. During those years he began assisting veterans to secure their benefits, which became his true passion.

He was as much of a warrior in advocating for veterans’ aid as he was on the battleground in Vietnam. He and a very dear friend, Harvey Norris, spent endless hours helping to secure rightly deserved benefits for veterans at no cost. He served on the Commission of Veterans Affairs for the State of Louisiana under Governor Kathleen Blanco and Governor Bobby Jindal, where he represented the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Carroll was honored to become a volunteer with Hospice of Acadiana for several years, during which time he was able to help 64 hospice patients. In his retirement, he was also very active with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, having served as Post Commander, All-American District Commander and All-American State Commander from 2008-2009, all of which he was quite proud of.

Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Dianne Rivette Knott; one son, John C. Knott and wife, Tara; one daughter, Toni Michelle Knott Malorin and husband, Danny; four grandchildren, Calli Malorin, Hunter Malorin, Drew Knott and Jake Knott; two great grandchildren, Gia Renee Malorin and Ellie Kate Malorin; one sister, Betty K. DeVillier; and one sister-in-law, Dolores R. Quebedeaux.
