High waters in the Atchafalaya Basin were threatening the closing of the Butte La Rose bridge and road northeast of St. Martinville. In 1973, the pontoon bridge was just one foot below its maximum height and the blacktop road was nearly flooded. Officials kept a watchful eye of the river gages.
