100 YEARS AGO February 28, 1925

The fancy dress ball given Mardi Gras night, at the large Levert Gymnasium, on the high school grounds by the Stanley Barras Post 71 of the American Legion was a brilliant event of the season, and largely attended. Mr. D.A. Bienvenu was King ad Miss Edna Bulliard was Queen.

Twenty-one parishes reported smallpox in January. In a number of these the physicians and health officers have found it imperative to vaccinate all children in the schools. Vaccination is a preventive measure. Enforcement of vaccination will practically eradicate small pox.

50 YEARS AGO February 19, 1975

Boucherie Master Mac Greig demonstrated the finer points of making boudin to Paul deMahy, Jaycee chairman of La Grande Boucherie des Cajun scheduled to be held at the Park Lodge in the Evangeline State Park. All the delicious boucherie dishes will be served as the community continues the revival of an old Acadian custom.

The St. Martin Police Jury adopted an amendment to the parish’s flood insurance ordinance requiring the issuance of building permits for all construction in the unincorporated areas of the parish.

25 YEARS AGO February 23, 2000

Local, state and federal law enforcement officers gathered in St. Martinville to conduct extensive tests of security glass found in the parish jail. Sheriff Charles Fuselier said the need for the tests became apparent during December’s hostage crisis in the parish jail.

It was announced that the old St. John Plantation building – the quintessential American General store, long a gathering place for many St. Martin Parish citizens – would close its doors after almost a century in business.

10 YEARS AGO March 4, 2015

Concerned parents and other St. Martinville area residents started an online petition to halt what they feared was the impending closure of Trinity Catholic School.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church members who were recipients of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. awards included Rena P. Edmond, Alma H. Alexander. Leo Pitte, Laura L. Pitte and Ricky Gary. The award was given for outstanding service to the church and community.
