100 YEARS AGO March 7, 1925

Messrs. Goulas and Olivier have, by mutual consent, dissolved their partnership, Mr. A.G. Goulas continues the business at the old stand and Mr. Andre A. Olivier has opened a store in the Guirard building, which he bought some time ago, which he will conduct for his own account. Mr. Olivier will make some change to the building, that will make it an up-to-date store.

With this issue, The Messenger enters upon its 40th year, we desire to take this occasion to extend our thanks and appreciation for the patronage accorded us during these forty years, and as we now have all kind of printing, we solicit a continuation of the patronage given us in the past.

50 YEARS AGO February 26, 1975

Newly pledged members of the Beta Rho chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in St. Martinville honored at the chapter’s February meeting included Mrs. Tim Hebert, Mrs. Steve Durand, Mrs. Bobbi Hardy, Mrs. Wiltz Bienvenu and Mrs. Clay Chataignier.

The St. Martin Grand Jury empaneled to serve for the six months, included eight women members, the first to serve on the grand jury. Another first was the appointment of one of the eight female members to serve as foreman of the jury.

25 YEARS AGO March 1, 2000

Members of the Catahoula Carnival Court who were presented during the community’s annual Mardi Grad festivities included Halphen “Buddy” and Gladys Broussard as King Pierre Dubois and Queen Marie Belle Chance.

Reigning as King Rotary LIV and Queen Rotary Anne LIV for the 2000 Rotary Mardi Gras Ball were Rotarian Joseph “Sing” Bonin and Emily Anne Broussard. They portrayed Czar Pete the Great and Queen Victoria of England.

10 YEARS AGO March 11, 2015

Preservation of one of the parish’s most valued natural features, Lake Martin, became an important topic of discussion. The complicated legal jurisdictions controlling the lake made preservation efforts difficult, but few residents would like to see continued development around the lake. At the St. Martin Parish Council meeting lake side property owner Mary Lynn Chauffe continued her efforts to ensure that the lake would remain protected into the future.
