March 21, 1925

The P.O.J. Sugar Cane. Those of our Cane planters who want to keep up their crop and make it profitable, should Cane plantwers were urged to read the American Sugar Cane League Bulletin and learn something of the P.O.J. 234 cane. It said that one ton of this cane planted in the Fall of this year will plant one acre, which in the Fall of 1926 will plant 30 acres which will give a crop in 1927 of 900 tons at $5 will make $4500.

A nice rain fell Tuesday morning, but not enough to satisfy all the planting interests. The ground was so dry, that it would have required heavy rains to soak the ground. All crops, however, were showing well.

The La. State Board of Health sent out a notice advising that spitting on floors of public places is prohibited by law and the Regulations of the Louisiana State Board of Health, as it conveys Tuberculosis and other, dangerous diseases.

March 19, 1975

A spokesman for the Atchafalaya Basin Levee District in Port Allen announced that letters officially informing residents and property owners in the Bayou Benoit area that all structures along the levee right of way would have to be moved were being mailed out.

Grocery prices included: 16 oz. Coffee Mate $1.09; Bryan Potted Meat - 5/$1; T-Bone Steak - $1.49/lb.; 1 Lb. Luzianne Coffee - 89¢.

Dr. Murphy Martin, director of the St. Martin Parish Health Unit said that a minor epidemic of head lice has developed in the parish.

C.G. Logan Construction Co. was the successful bidder on a project that calls for the installation of a 12” water main along Doyle Melancon Extension from Grand Point Hwy to Latiolais St. in Breaux Bridge connecting existing city lines. The distance is roughly 9,300 feet and the work will cost the city $248.993..

Ray Pellerinwas recognized at the Breaux Bridge City Council meeting for his recent selection as “Volunteer of the Year” by the Louisiana Association of Fairs.

The 7th Annual Heartstrings & Angel Wings Gumbo Cook-off was held in the Henry Guidry Memorial Park in Henderson. More than 40 cooks participated in the annual fund raiser. Winners in the Chicken and Sausage category were: 1st place, Journee’s Believers; 2nd place, Tucker’s Warriors1; and 3rd place: Team Ordoyne Girls. Seafood 1st Team Camille; 2nd Strata Pac; and 3rd Cher T Bebe.

Catahoula Elementary students received the award for highest student participation calculated by percentage in the St. Martin Parish Science and Math Fair. Science Fair winners were Nathan Theriot, 1st place; Jalyn Melancon, 3rd; Leryn Quintana, 2nd; and Tori Frederick, 1st; Chloe Daspit, 1st;, Reily Dorsey, 1st;, Alyssa Casey, 1st;, and Ty Gardemal, 1st.
