Pedestrian killed in St. Martin Parish crash along Louisiana Highway 31

St. Martinville – A pedestrian was killed after being struck by two vehicles around 5 a.m. on March 11 on Louisiana Highway 31 near Lady of the Lake Road in St. Martin Parish, according to Louisiana State Police Troop I.

Troopers began investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of 33-year-old Trey Comeaux of New Iberia shortly after 5 a.m. on March 11.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Comeaux was walking south on LA Hwy 31 while pushing a bicycle in heavy fog. At the same time, a 2012 Dodge Ram was also traveling south.

For reasons still under investigation, the Ram struck Comeaux, causing him to enter the northbound lane. Shortly after the initial crash, a northbound Dodge Charger also struck Comeaux.

Comeaux sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.

The two drivers were properly restrained and uninjured, state police said.

A routine toxicology sample was obtained from Comeaux and submitted for analysis. The driver of the Dodge Ram was not suspected of being impaired and voluntarily provided a breath sample which revealed no alcohol detected. This crash remains under investigation.

Pedestrian

Troopers remind pedestrians that Louisiana law requires them to use a sidewalk when one is available. If no sidewalk is provided, pedestrians should walk facing oncoming traffic when practical.

Walking against the flow of traffic allows pedestrians to better anticipate approaching vehicles and react promptly.

Additionally, state police said to never assume that a motorist can see you and stay visible by wearing bright or reflective clothing in low-light or reduced visibility conditions, such as fog and rain.
