March 28, 1925

Since the building of the protection levee, a large number of people along the levee in St. Landry and St. Martin parishes, find that their lands must now be drained to produce crops, as no land not properly drained will grow any crop. This district has recently voted a tax which is attacked by some tax payers in St. Landry, which suit is now pending in court.

Effective April 15th, 1925, the new postal rate will become a law, and the following changes will take place: First class postage: Letters and all sealed matter, no change; but post cards and private mailing cards will require 2¢ post age.

March 26, 1975

Charlene Burch of Breaux Bridge, was one of 20 state high school students selected by USL to receive a $4,000, 4-year academic scholarship. The 20 students were selected from approximately 200 high school seniors who scored exceptionally high on their ACTs. The 20 recipients were chosen on the basis of test scores, character, academic promise, references, health record and high school achievement.

State Police Sgt. Dannie R. Brown of Breaux Bridge was named St. Martin Parish’s “Outstanding Lawman of the Year” by the Parks Knights of Columbus Council.

The Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Outdoor Recreation gave its approval to a $16,339 grant for the construction of a boat launching ramp on Bayou Peyronnet at Henderson.

Officers and directors of the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival Association were joined by local and parish officials for the unveiling of the long-awaited Parc Hardy sign on Rees Street.

Ben Robin of Cecilia High School placed sixth out of 270 competitors at the Harvard 2000 Oratory International Speech Tournament. More than 250 schools represented 46 states. Robin competed in original oratory.

Budget problems in the state put several facilities at risk of closure. One of them speci ccall listed for possible mothballing was Longfellow Evangeline State Historic Site.

AARP officers held a luncheon meeting with state reps to discuss the needs of seniors and the upcoming legislative session. AARP urged lawmakers to enact The Caregiver Act to better support family caregivers as they safely help Louisiana seniors stay at home. Attending the event were Priscilla Breaux, secretary; Brenda Hobbs, vice- president; Margaret Richard, president; and Andrew Muhl, AARP state advocacy director.
