Playoff pairings for Louisiana high school baseball and softball teams were to be announced this week but not in time for today’s edition of the Teche News.
Breaux Bridge and Cecilia were each expected to earn playoff bids in the Division II Non-Select baseball 24team bracket.
As of Monday, BBHS was 15th with a 19-12 overall record and was the District 5-4A champion. If the power points held through Monday, the Tigers would face No. 18 DeRidder in a best-of-three home series to open the playoffs.
Cecilia (17-14) was 19th in the latest unofficial power rankings, according to geauxpreps.
com, and would play No. 14 Minden in a best-of-three opening series on the road.
St. Martinville is 29th in the Division III Non-Select power rankings, according to Geaux Preps, and would not earn a playoff bid.
The Breaux Bridge High Tigers went 1-2 in baseball games this past week, falling to Catholic High of New Iberia 1-0 on April 7, bouncing back to beat Lacassine 6-3 on Thursday but falling to Kaplan 6-3 on Friday.
The Tigers beat Lacassine 6-3 on Thursday despite getting outhit 8-3 and committing two errors to none for the visiting Cardinals.
Caynon Ardoin earned the win on the hill for the Tigers, scattering eight hits in a complete game and allowing three runs, only one earned, with one walk and nine strikeouts in seven innings.
Ardoin also had a hit with two RBIs and Bryce Melancon and Benjamin Ellender each had a hit and an RBI.
The bottom of the lineup came through as Evan Theriot, Ellender and Christian Camacho each drove in a run in the six, seven and eight slots in the lineup.
Breaux Bridge lost a 1-0 pitcher’s duel to Catholic High of New Iberia on Tuesday.
The Tigers managed just one hit off CHS hurler Lane Fenske, a single by Cullen Laseter in the second inning. The Tigers threatened to score that inning with a walk by Benjamin Ellender followed by the Laseter base hit to center field.
A fielder’s choice erased the runner heading to third but a walk by Kyson Rebert loaded the bases before a pop out ended the frame.
Breaux Bridge did not get another baserunner to first base the rest of the way.
Laseter also pitched a complete game for the Tigers, allowing only four hits and four walks while striking out five.
The Panthers got their only run in the fifth after a walk to JohnDavid Hidalgo and Izaak Andre’s double to left field.
Fenske got the win, allowing one hit and two walks with 14 strikeouts in seven innings.
Neither team committed an error.
In a game at Kaplan on Friday, the Tigers scored three runs in the top of the third inning but gave up six runs in the bottom of the fourth as each team scored in only one inning.
Cullen Laseter had a double and scored a run for BBHS. Sam Armentor had a hit with an RBI and a run and Peyton Gonzalez also scored a run.
Armentor also took the loss, pitching five innings and allowing six hits with six runs and one walk. He struck out three batters. Only one run was earned as the Tigers committed four errors in the game.
St. Martinville lost a game to Westminster Christian on April 7 but beat Episcopal School of Acadiana 9-4 on April 8 before falling to Berchmans Academy 4-3
on Thursday.
The Tigers were then run-ruled in a pair of four-inning games on Friday and Saturday, losing to St. Edmund 20-0 and to Hanson Memorial 13-0. Against ESA, the Tigers scored five runs in the fourth inning to surge ahead and tacked on three runs over their next two innings to put the game out of reach.
SMSH won despite committing six errors to ESA’s two. Each team had seven hits.
Kamryn LeBlanc led the Tigers with two hits and three RBIs and Branson Chiasson had two hits and an RBI. Logan Bienvenu also had a hit and an RBI and Jayton Walker and Dixon Aymond added base knocks.
Aymond also pitched five innings to earn the win, scattering six hits and allowing three runs, only one earned, with four walks and three strikeouts.
Branson Chiasson pitched the last two innings, allowing two hits and one run with two walks.
St. Martinville lost to Westminster Christian 10-0 in five innings on April 7, collecting no hits and surrendering seven unearned runs thanks to four errors.
Ashlon Smith pitched three innings in taking the loss, allowing only five hits but giving up 10 runs. Seven were unearned. He walked five and struck out four. Kamryn LeBlanc pitched two shutout innings in relief, allowing no hits and two walks.
SMSH lost to Berchmans despite getting two more hits than the Saints.
The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the third inning. Berchmans scored two in the first and two in the third.
Dixon Aymond had a hit and two RBIs to lead SMSH and Branson Chiasson had a hit and an RBI. Connor Rome and Logan Bienvenu also had hits.
Bienvenu threw seven innings in a tough loss, allowing only five hits. He walked three and struck out six with two unearned runs off four SMSH errors.
Against St. Edmund at home, the Tigers surrendered runs in all four innings, including four runs in the first, one in the second, four in the third and 10 in the fourth.
Ashlon Smith had St. Martinville’s only hit. Smith also pitched two innings, allowing seven hits and 10 runs with two walks and two strikeouts on the mound.
Kamryn LeBlanc also pitched two innings and allowed seven hits and 10 runs with five walks and a strikeout.
Against Hanson Memorial in Franklin, the Tigers gave up 10 runs in the third inning and three in the fourth.
Logan Bienvenu went 2-for-2 and Dixon Aymond had a hit in the loss.
Aymond pitched four innings to take the loss, allowing 13 runs on 11 hits with five walks and two strikeouts.

Softball
Cecilia and Breaux Bridge are both expected to earn softball playoff bids in Non-Select Division II.
Cecilia (7-17) was 20th and Breaux Bridge (14-13) was 22nd in the most recent unofficial power rankings, according to Geaux Preps.
If those power rankings hold, Cecilia would travel to No. 13 Franklin Parish (15-9) and Breaux Bridge would travel to No. 11 Belle Chasse (14-11) in the first round of the playoffs.
St. Martinville (2-15) is 37th in the most recent unofficial power rankings and would not make the 26-team field.
Breaux Bridge got a five-inning, 10-run rule win over Westminster Christian on April 8, scoring six runs in the first before putting the game away with two runs in the fifth. The Lady Tigers also scored two in the second and one in the third.
Calie Chiasson homered and singled and scored twice in two atbats. Brandi Williams went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run, Zoey Simoneaux went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, Nyah Albert went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, Layla Hebert had a hit and an RBI, Gracie Hebert went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs, and Laiylah Albert went 3-for-3 with three RBIs for Breaux Bridge.
Simoneaux pitched five innings and allowed one run on five hits with no walks and one strikeout to get the win.
BBHS lost to Opelousas Catholic on the road on Thursday, 19-8, in six innings.
