Parish bridge work underway, planned
Parish President Chester Cedars reminds area residents that the pontoon bridge at Butte LaRose is closed for repairs through Thursday, Oct. 4. At the Sept. 18 Parish Council committee meeting, Cedars said state bridge inspections will be carried out in October and if the structure is not repaired by then it could be closed down for a much longer period. Engineering proposals are also being drawn for repairs to the Potato Shed bridge north of Henderson and Four-Mile Bayou Road bridge in Lower St. Martin. State approval has been received allowing diversion of funds from Four-Mile Bayou Road repairs to the bridges in need of attention on that road. In other business, construction of an unpermitted multi-story structure on Potato Shed Road at Bayou Amy has been halted by the owner after parish government notified him of plans to seek an injunction forcing stoppage. He has agreed to resume construction only after proper permits and inspections have been done. Also, the council approved a resolution in support of the proposed Amendment 3 to the state constitution which would make it easier for public bodies to enter into agreements for mutual support. Presently, the constitution requires a set of three onerous conditions to be met to allow the loaning of equipment or personnel in emergencies. Saying it is long overdue, Cedars strongly advocated the amendment, which will make cooperative intergovernmental agreements easier. Traffic Ordinances The council passed an ordinance permitting right turns only from School Sreet Extension onto Alcide Bonin Road in Cecilia on school days from 7 to 9 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. The speed limit on Oscar Guidry Road, near Parks, will be reset to 25 mph. Residents who may not have noticed the new signs need to be aware that the speed limit on Main Street through St. Martinville’s downtown square has been reduced to 15 mph. Meeting Change The council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 6, which is election day, has been rescheduled for Monday, Nov. 5. Awards for Guilbeau Keep Louisiana Beautiful has presented two awards to Recycling/Compliance Technician Holly Guilbeau. Guilbeau received the organization’s Circle of Excellence Award as well as the Outstanding Affiliate Director award.
