HEAVY RAINS that swept across St. Martin Parish early Tuesday morning knocked down ready-to-harvest sugarcane in many fields from St. Martinville to Arnaudville, including this patch along LA 96/Catahoula Hwy just east of St. Martinville. County Agent Stuart Gauthier says the lodged cane can still be harvested with the modern combines now in use but some sugar content could be lost as the plants struggle to right themselves. “Cool, dry weather would sure be helpful in the coming days,” he says.(Sally Angelle)
