BB tops Pearl River to earn state tourney spot

BB tops Pearl River to earn state tourney spot
Breaux Bridge – Breaux Bridge rallied from a first game loss last Friday to top Pearl River in the next two outings and earn a berth in the LHSAA Class 4A state tournament later this week. It will be coach Kyle Cormier’s fourth time in the semifinal round, the most recent being in 2017 when his Tigers lost to Tioga, 6-5. Breaux Bridge dropped the first game of the quarterfinal round to the Rebels by a 5-3 margin on Friday. But after an unexpected day of rest due to a rainstorm early Saturday morning that pushed the series to Sunday, the Tigers posted back-to-back wins of 7-2 and 9-8 to punch their tournament ticket. The Bridge owns a 32-6 record when they take the diamond against No. 2 Lakeshore (33-4) at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Sulphur’s McMurry Park. The Titans have reeled off five straight victories in advancing to the tournament, trouncing No. 31 Morgan City, No. 18 Assumption and No. 10 Terrebonne. Coach Cormier said Monday that he and his staff had not yet had a chance to take a close look at the Titans, but he knows Lakeshore has some good athletes and a tough starting lineup. Breaux Bridge used some big bats to pull off Sunday’s wins over Pearl River, with Christian Gonzalez driving in two runs with a 4th inning homer to boost the Bridge into a 4-1 lead. He also got credit for the win on the mound, going the full seven innings while recording 10 strikeouts. In game 3, the Tigers got home runs from Keegan Cormier, Layton Berard and Peyton Parker in each of the first three innings to build an 8-1 lead. Cormier, the game’s starting pitcher, hit his homer with two men on base while Berard notched a grand slam and Parker hit his with the bases empty. Pearl River managed to knot the score at 8-all in the top of the fifth inning, but Noah Frederick banged a RBI single in the bottom of the inning for the winning run. No. 1 Tioga (29-5) and No 4 Benton (33-6) face off in the other semifinal contest at 11 a.m. Thursday. The championship game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
