St. Martinville Tourism Director Elaine Clement has raised the alarm that the trademark Evangeline Oak is in need of maintenance. The the ancient live oak is dangerously entwined with vines and the long-term health of the tree could be at risk. Clement said she will consult with LSU AgCenter Extension Agent Stuart Gauthier about the tree this week. Private funding will be sought to cover the approximate $2,000 cost of hiring a licensed arborist to remedy the problem. (Karl Jeter)
