Kiwanis Club car show is Saturday
Owners of classic cars, trucks and motorcycles are polishing their prized possessions to converge on Magnolia Park in St. Martinville this Saturday, Aug. 24, for the third annual Kiwanis Hangin’ on the Bayou Antique and Classic Car Show. An impressive turn-out of 279 classic vehicles from Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Alabama made last year’s show one of the most successful and enjoyable events ever to be held at this tree-lined park on the Bayou Teche. Original, restored and customized classics from days gone by, rat rods, antique limousines, fire trucks and stout off-roaders are sure to satisfy the tastes of all who love fine rolling treasures from the past and present. Local artists and craftsmen will again fill the pavilion, along with food vendors who will be serving refreshments and classic Cajun shrimp and alligator jambalaya as well as regular jambalaya, juicy burgers, hot dogs and nachos. Gates will open at 8 a.m. and concessions will be available starting at 11 a.m. Award presentations are tentatively scheduled for 3:30 p.m. This year, 50 awards will be presented to winners in the various classes and divisions of vehicles. “To me everyone is a winner because they are giving back to our organization,” says event organizer Michelle Broussard. “With the funds raised, we were able to entertain 52 children and their foster parents with gifts and breakfast last Christmas. Proceeds also help us to continue our projects such as Every Child’s a Swimmer.” Earlier this summer Kiwanis volunteers taught 132 kindergartners how to swim free of charge. “We were also able to provide all 2nd graders of our parish with a book at Easter, she added. “We are a non-profit organization and all of our proceeds go back into our community.” Registration fee for show vehicles is $30. Entry fee for spectators is only $1 or a canned good. These proceeds will help support the work of Fr. Michael Champagne and St. Theresa’s food distribution programs. The boat ramp and disc golf course will be closed during the event. No pets or four-wheelers please. Call Broussard at 523-2472 for more information.
