LaSuCa wraps up successful season

1.8M tons of cane; 439.5M pounds of sugar

The Louisiana Sugar Cane Coop (LaSuCa) wrapped up its 2021 grinding season Sunday, processing the final billets of a big crop.
The last load of cane was delivered to the mill on Saturday and the last of the raw sugar dropped on Sunday, according to Mike Comb, general manager.
The mill began grinding cane on Sept. 28 and has operated 24/7 for the past 31⁄2 months.
Comb said the mill processed 1,829,368 tons of cane which yielded 439,527,365 pounds of raw sugar. That's an average of just over 240 pounds of sugar per ton of cane.
The 1,829,368 tons processed is about 100,000 tons more than the coop had projected at the beginning of the season and is about 120,000 tons more than the 1,759,000 tons that went through the mill during the 2020 season.
The mill experienced only minor problems during the 122 days of continuous operation and Comb says coop directors are very pleased with the overall season.
"We recorded less than 121⁄2 inches of rain (at the mill) dur ing the entire harvest," he said, "and no significant cold weather. So we were pretty fortunate in that regard."
