He was first African American to serve as superintendent of Schools in St. Martin Parish.

Survivors included his wife, Isabella Roberts Chevalier; two children, Dr. Tiffanny Chevalier and Robert Chevalier; and siblings, Ezebe Chevalier, Thelma Mouton, Irma Robicheaux, Lillian Rosignon and Joanna Chevalier.
