t. Martinville – A Memorial Mass was celebrated at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2018, at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church for Alton “Big Al” Joseph Romero, 70, who passed away on Monday, October 22, 2018, at New Iberia Manor North. Rev. Rusty P. Richard officiated at the Memorial Mass. Gift Bearers were Carol Romero Hall and Larry J. Romero. Interment will be held at a later date. Mr. Romero honorably served his country in the United States Army for two years during the Vietnam War. An avid collector of books, majority of them being books of World War II, he was intrigued with World War II history and had a collection of different World War II books. “Big Al” enjoyed listening to the 60’s music, especially his favorite band, the Beatles. He cherished moments spent with his family, especially his nieces and nephews since he never had children of his own. He is survived by his loving mother, Evelyn Romero of St. Martinville; his sister, Carol Romero Hall and husband Eric of Baton Rouge; his brother, Larry J. Romero and wife Judith of Iota; five nephews, one niece, several great-nephews and great-nieces, one great-great-nephew and one great-great-niece. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph “Bebe” Ophe Romero. The family would like to extend special thanks to all personnel at Iberia Manor North, Hospice Compassus, and all who showed love and kindness to him.
